Old town bell tower, the landmark of the old town

The Altstadter Glockenturm is a bell tower in Altstadt , a district of the municipality of Kirkel in the Saar- Palatinate district . He is considered the landmark of the place.

history

The 17 meter high bell tower in neo-Gothic style was built in 1859 in place of the dilapidated wooden bell tower from the 1820s. Old town had no church at that time. The tower was in operation until 1962 and rang several times a day, also in the event of a fire and at funerals. In 1962 the Martinskirche was built, which took over the ringing from now on. Today the bell tower is only rung at 7:30 a.m. at the beginning of school. A bell tower festival was celebrated for the 150th anniversary in 2010 (one year late).

The Karlsberg Brewery restored the tower in 2003 on the occasion of the brewery's 125th anniversary. Its founder Christian Weber grew up opposite the tower. The restoration costs were 10,000 euros.
