Alumina do Norte do Brasil SA (Alunorte for short) is a Brazilian aluminum oxide refinery. Alunorte claims to be the largest manufacturer in the world.

history

The company, headquartered in Barcarena , Pará state , was founded in 1978 based on an agreement between the governments of Brazil and Japan . The plant was located in northern Brazil because the main bauxite deposits are also located in the state of Pará .

The factory started operations in 1995 with an annual capacity of 1.1 million tons. At present around 6.3 million t of aluminum oxide are produced annually in the refinery from bauxite ore with seven production lines. Alunorte has its own ship landing bridge, which is directly connected to the plant by transport lines.

Alunorte is an essential part of the aluminum production chain in Brazil. According to its own information, the company employs around 2,350 (or 4,500) people.

Alunorte has been a subsidiary of the Norwegian Norsk Hydro since 2011 .

In March 2018, production had to be halved due to requirements imposed by the Brazilian authorities. This was preceded by heavy rainfall in mid-February, which led to an overflow of the retention basins for red mud . During subsequent inspections, the authorities found three illegal drainage channels through which water was diverted from the premises.
