The Gilbert Range is located in southeast Queensland in Australia . The hill country is 390 kilometers from Brisbane and 37 kilometers from Taroom . The Gilbert Range in the Atherton Tablelands , a part of the Great Dividing Range , reaches a height of about 330 meters above sea level.

The mountainous region was discovered at the end of 1844 by the Prussian explorer Ludwig Leichhardt . He named it during his first expedition to Australia from 1844 to 1845 after a British expedition member, the naturalist John Gilbert . Gilbert was killed in an attack by Aborigines on June 28, 1845 . Leichhardt also named the Gilbert River, which rises in the Gilbert Range, after him.

The Gilbert Range quartzite occurs in the mountainous region, which is stratigraphically assigned to the Burra Group , which arose in the late Ordovician .
