Alvand ( Persian الوند), also Kuh-e Alvand , is the name of a promontory of the Zagros in the Hamadan Province ( Iran ). The largest elevation of the same name is 3574 m high. Like the Zagros, the mountains run from northwest to southeast. It consists mainly of intrusive rock , namely granite and diorite . Orontes is an older name for the mountains .
North of the Alvand lies Hamadan , south of it the city of Tuysarkan . A section of the ancient Persian royal road once crossed the Alvand Mountains between these two cities . From Hamadan one reaches the foothills of the Alvand with two Achaemenid cuneiform tablets: Ganj Nameh, 12 km away from the city center . There are opportunities for walking and mountain tours in summer and skiing in winter.
