Peter Schuhmayer (born September 11, 1960 in Vienna ) is an Austrian violinist and founding member and first violinist of the Artis Quartet .

Life

Peter Schuhmayer was born in Vienna as the fourth son of Anna and Fritz Schuhmayer. He received his first violin lessons at the age of 7. In 1970 he was enrolled at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna and studied violin with Hertha Binder and Josef Suk .

Graduated from the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with honors with a degree in chamber string music.

From 1979 he also received private lessons from Alfred Staar . In the same year he graduated from the BORG for music students in Vienna. In 1979 he won first prize and the special prize of the Vienna Philharmonic at the Austrian national competition Jugend musiziert in the chamber music category as 1st violinist with the Young Vienna String Quartet . After two members left, the Artis Quartet emerged in 1980 .

Between 1980 and 1984 he played as a permanent substitute in the orchestra of the Vienna State Opera and the Vienna Philharmonic under conductors such as Karl Böhm , Herbert von Karajan , Carlos Kleiber , Claudio Abbado , Riccardo Muti and Zubin Mehta .

1980–85 guest concertmaster with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, the Vienna Chamber Philharmonic, the Vienna String Soloists and the Vorarlberg Symphony Orchestra.

Solo appearances with the New Vienna Chamber Orchestra, the RSO Berlin, the Orchester National d'Ile de France, the Norfolk Festival Orchestra, the orchestral association of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna. In 1984/85 he studied with the Artis Quartet at the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati (USA). With the Artis Quartet he won prizes at competitions in Cambridge / GB (1983), Evian / F (1984) and Yellow Springs / USA (1985).

He began his international career with concerts in the most important international halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the Library of Congress in Washington, Wigmore Hall and Queen Elisabeth Hall in London , the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Suntory Hall in Tokyo, the Philharmonie Berlin , the Wiener Musikverein , the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and at international festivals such as the Salzburg Festival , the Vienna and Berlin Festival Weeks , the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival , the Schubertiade , in Lockenhaus, the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival and the Pablo Casals Festival in Prades.

To date, Schuhmayer has more than 40 CD recordings with the Artis Quartet with works by Joseph Haydn , Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Ignaz Josef Pleyel , Ludwig van Beethoven , Franz Schubert , Bedřich Smetana , Antonín Dvořák , Johannes Brahms , Robert Schumann , Alexander von Zemlinsky , Michael Gielen , Karl Weigl , Arnold Schönberg , Alban Berg , Anton Webern , Egon Wellesz , Herbert Willi , Richard Dünser , Iván Eröd , Herbert Zipper , Fritz Kreisler , Erwin Schulhoff , Franz Mittler and Gottfried von Eine .

Peter Schuhmayer has been a member of the artistic advisory board of Gottfried von Eine Musik-Privatstiftung since 2016.

2018 Award of the professional title "Professor" by the Austrian Federal President.

Teaching activity

From 1993 to 1998 he was visiting professor for chamber music at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz , Institute Oberschützen. He has been a lecturer in violin since 1996 and chamber music at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna since 2006 . 2017 habilitation in chamber music at the University of Music and Performing Arts.

Lecturer at the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra under Claudio Abbado, juror at national and international competitions, sought-after guest lecturer at masterclasses a. a.
