The alveolar bone (also: alveolar process ) is the name given to the bone part of the upper jaw (processus alveolaris maxillae) or lower jaw (processus alveolaris mandibulae) in humans or mammals , in which the alveoli (tooth sockets) are located, in which the teeth are located by means of the Sharpey fibers are anchored. The attachment apparatus (periodontal ligament) is the functional anchoring system of the tooth.

In the edentulous jaw, the alveolar process is gradually broken down and reduced to a narrow bone crest, which - without a prosthetic restoration - results in a loss of height of the lower face.
