Alwarthirunagari ( Tamil : ஆழ்வார்திருநகரி Āḻvārtirunakari [ ˈaːɻʋaːrˌt̪iɾɯnaɡəɾi ], also Alvartirunagari ) is a small town in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu . The population is around 9,300 (2011 census).

Alwarthurinagari is located in the Thoothukudi district in southern Tamil Nadu, 26 kilometers southeast of Tirunelveli on the southern bank of the Thamirabarani River. Administratively, the city belongs to the Taluk Tiruchendur of the Thoothukudi district.

In Alwarthirunagari around the year 800 Nammalvar , the most important of the Alvars (Tamil Vishnuit poet saints), was born. The name Alwarthirunagari means "holy city of Alvars". The original place name was Kurugur . The center of Alwarthirunagari is the Adinatha Temple, an important Hindu temple which is dedicated to the god Vishnu . The temple dates back to the 13th century, but most of the components of the extensive temple complex date from the 16th / 17th century. Century. In addition to the main shrine for the god Vishnu, the temple also houses a secondary shrine for Nammalvar. The temple of Alwarthirunagari is one of the 108 holy places of Tamil Vishnuism ( Divya Desams ).

76 percent of the population of Alwarthirunagari are Hindus , 19 percent Muslim and 5 percent Christian . The main language is Tamil , which is spoken by almost 100 percent of the population as their mother tongue.
