The song was released in 1994 as the first single from the band's sixth studio album I Say I Say I Say . Mute Records released the single in the UK while Elektra Records released it in the United States. Always was written by Erasure members Vince Clarke and Andy Bell and produced by Martyn Ware .

The song revolves around the synthesizer harmonies and the lyrics backed by Clarke and Bell. The music video depicts Bell in a landscape inspired by Chinese painting , which is deeply snow-covered in winter and which he transforms into a blooming spring landscape with a magic ball. He has to fight a demon who wants to turn everything back into a winter landscape, and finally defeats him with the help of his magic ball.

The song became Erasure's 13th top 10 hit in the UK Singles Chart, where it reached position four as the best. In the United States, the single became Erasure's third top 20 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with a top 20, six years after her last major US pop hit. Always rose to number six in the US dance charts .

The song was covered live by the synthpop musicians MNDR . There is a cover version by Jessica Jay (1996). In 2012, the synth-pop band Xiu Xiu covered the song for a Record Store Day single.
