location

The market is a square in the middle of the old town of Lüneburg. The square is almost rectangular and extends around 170 to 190 meters. To the east, the square is bounded by Grosse Bäckerstrasse . In the north of the square, the street Am Ochsenmarkt goes west , in the south to the west Waagestrasse . Bardowicker Straße and An den Brodbänken meet the square on the northeast corner . The numbering starts with 1, the town hall on the western side. The houses with the numbers 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 are on the south side. The number 7 is on the northern side, it is also called the Lüneburg district court .

history

A market duty was already imposed in 965. In 1244 Neumarkt is spoken of, but where the old market was located is no longer known today. Market day was Wednesday and Saturday. But the square was also a place of jurisdiction, so the stake was on the northeast corner of the town hall. The Luna fountain was created around 1540. The current shape of the square with the trees on the northern and southern sides goes back to a design by the city building councilor A. Maske from 1887. The paths on the square also date from this time.

Architectural monuments

There are six architectural monuments in the street.
