UJZ Glocksee

The Independent Youth Center Glocksee (UJZ Glocksee) is an autonomous youth center in Hanover . It was built in 1972 in the Calenberger Neustadt district and, along with the UJZ Kornstrasse in Hanover- Nordstadt, is the oldest facility of its kind in Germany.

The UJZ Glocksee (also called Glocke ) is a center for child and youth cultural work and operates, among other things, the self-administered event venues Café and Indiego, which are among the most popular clubs and concert locations in Hanover, especially among the student scene.

history

In 1971 a youth center action group was formed, which demanded the city of Hanover to provide a building for the establishment of an independent youth center. At the end of November, the city refused this in a conversation with around 50 young people in the House of Youth . On December 11, 1971, after a clay-stone-shards concert , the activists occupied an office building at Arndtstrasse 20 that had been unused for eleven months, and three days later the police stormed the house and forcibly cleared it.

As a result, the young people parted ways. The UJZ Kornstraße in the north of the city emerged from one group shortly afterwards . The others founded a citizens' initiative with the aim of building a youth center in the former trucking office on Glockseestrasse. An association emerged from the initiative that negotiated the use of the building with the city. From October 1972 onwards, based on a preliminary, verbal agreement, three rooms could be occupied. The negotiations with the city dragged on and threatened to fail several times. On November 7, 1973, a user agreement was finally agreed.

The young people went to work and by summer 1974 a bar, a children's room, a youth room, a motorcycle workshop and an office had been expanded and set up. In 1975 the CDU in particular called for the financial support of the UJZ to cease. In addition to the falling number of visitors and the costs invested to date of 1.3 million DM , the participation of some young people in the Red Dot campaign was a thorn in the side of the politicians . A councilor received a reprimand during a meeting for the interjection " Baader-Meinhof-Gang ". However, in the years that followed, the SPD and FDP rejected all attempts by the CDU to stop funding.

In 1976 the usage contract was terminated at the end of 1977 with the aim of continuing the youth center in a reduced form. There were protests, and the NDR reported from the Glocksee site. Since no agreement was reached on a new contract by December 31, 1977, there was initially a transitional contract. In September 1977, the building authorities switched off the electricity. It was not until July 1, 1978 that a new contract was signed, which initially ran until the end of 1980 and was automatically extended for another year. There were repeated calls from politicians to end support for the youth center.

On May 14, 1981, the UJZ Glocksee was closed indefinitely, the employees had stopped work in protest. In July it continued, however. In the months that followed, tough negotiations about the rights of use ran again, and the parties involved repeatedly let the contract negotiations break. In July 1982 a new 5-year contract was finally agreed.

After numerous arguments between punks and skins during the chaos days in 1984, the punks withdrew to the grounds of the UJZ Glocksee on August 4th, where they were surrounded by the police. After the police used tear gas in the courtyard , panic broke out among the punks, whereupon the Café Glocksee was completely destroyed. The city contributed 59,000 DM to the reconstruction.

In 1988 the Glocksee Bauhaus eV association was founded and in the following years modernized and renovated the various rooms. In 1994 a newly designed youth area and the halfpipe were inaugurated. After six years of negotiations, a new license agreement was signed on October 31, 2006. Today the youth center has established itself and enjoys support from citizens and politics. This is also proven by the numerous collaborations with schools, the Office for Youth and Family, and the city youth council .
