From a different perspective

The Independent Youth Center Kornstrasse (UJZ Kornstrasse) in Hanover was founded in 1972 as an independent youth center by the “Initiativgruppe Jugendzentrum” in the Nordstadt district . Along with the Glocksee Independent Youth Center in Hanover, it is the oldest institution of its kind in Germany.

The "UJZ Korn" was created in the course of the student movement in the 1960s and developed into a meeting place for youthful subculture in the following period .

history

prehistory

In 1971 five young people squatted a house in an empty house on Arndtstrasse in Hanover in order to create the first autonomous youth center in Germany. The police ended the attempt by evacuating the building.

Emergence

The sponsoring association founded the UJZ with the aim of politicizing young people in a former factory building on Kornstrasse leased by the “Youth Center Initiative Group”.

A pub was attached to the youth center, a sound cooperative , a bookstore, various workshops, a cinema and a printing plant. As a result, the "UJZ Korn" developed into a meeting place for alternative youth and subculture, but also a meeting place for groups and movements as diverse as:

In addition, the UJZ carried out rehabilitation work for young people who had committed criminal offenses.

From 1974 to 1979, the city of Hanover supported the youth center with finances for leasing, maintenance and the employment of two social workers . Funding was discontinued as a result of conflicts, as financial aid was increasingly tied to political concessions.

In the course of the 1980s , the UJZ Kornstraße developed into a center for hardcore punk , with national bands also performing in the UJZ Kornstraße. Attacks by the press, politics and administration culminated in 1980 when the board of the association was suspected of supporting a terrorist organization. Nationwide announced the UJZ Kornstraße in connection with the occupation of was Sprengel -Geländes by the outgoing from here Chaostage .

1982 the lease expired; Youth center employees founded a real estate company and bought the building. After the bankruptcy in 1988 and the subsequent foreclosure auction of the building, the "Association for the Promotion of Political Youth Culture" was awarded the contract. The nationwide declining importance of the politically left “subculture” as well as the political and social fragmentation of the youth scene also led to a loss of importance at the UJZ Kornstraße.

Long-term backup

After extensive building renovations from 1991 to 1994, the existence of the UJZ was secured as a youth center and children's shop. At the same time, independence from political requirements was achieved.

Double grain

After it became known that the neighboring house was vacant, plans arose in the UJZ Korn to acquire it, which would expand the usable area from 500 m² to 800 m². Thanks to a complex financing project based on individual loans of € 5,000 and small donations, the house was acquired from the city of Hanover at the beginning of summer 2011 for a purchase price of € 200,000 (including renovation costs). With the help of construction companies and our own work, the house (Kornstrasse 32) should soon be completely rebuilt.
