The house at Am Pförtchen 5 in the Upper Franconian town of Kronach is referred to as " Fronfeste " or "New Büttelei" according to its original use as a city prison and as accommodation for the Kronach bailiffs . Today the building, erected in the first half of the 18th century as part of the city fortifications , serves as a residential building.

history

The sandstone block building pulled in front of the city wall was built in the years 1722-25 by master builder Andreas Lohnmüller. It originally housed the city prison, which was equipped with twelve cells , and the living quarters of the bailiffs of the Kronach regional court. Several loopholes in the outer walls made it possible, in the event of an attack, to swipe the area outside the city wall, which ran in a north-south direction in this section.

From 1814 the building was largely privately owned and used as a residential and commercial building; a quarter of the property rights remained with the city of Kronach until 2000. For the new purpose, the loopholes were closed and partially walled up from the outside or replaced by built-in windows.

After the remaining part of the city was sold to a private person in 2000, the new owner extensively renovated and refurbished the building both inside and outside. After the renovation of the plastered and half-timbered rear of the building, the last step in 2011 was the restoration of the sandstone front facing Schwedenstrasse.

Inscription stone

At the foot of the building's west facade facing Schwedenstrasse there is a statue of St. John Nepomuk on a pedestal . Above the statue is one of the former loopholes that were walled up during the renovation of the building in the 19th century and exposed again during the renovation work in 2011. Above the loopholes, the coat of arms of the reigning Prince-Bishop of the Bamberg diocese , Lothar Franz von Schönborn , is embedded in the wall.

An inscription stone is embedded in the north wall of the building, which refers to the year of construction 1725, the builder Andreas Lohnmüller and the then mayor of Kronach, Johann Andreas Tribl.
