The Am Schilde square was a triangular square in the historic city center of the Hanseatic city of Rostock . It was part of the former middle town , north of the town hall . The south side of the shield was formed by the confluence of the also no longer existing Ortsund and the street An der Hege , which is now a dead end . The northern tip of this square led to the intersection of Vogelsang and Großer Mönchenstrasse . To the east, the former Kronenstrasse branched off towards Fischbank .

The shield was first mentioned in 1351. In the early modern period, because of its close proximity to the Neuer Markt, it was preferred to be inhabited by shopkeepers, who were in the middle of the town's merchants at that time. One of these shopkeepers was the Rostock chronicler and draftsman Vicke Schorler . On the south side of the shield there was a very often depicted Gothic double-gabled house.

During the Second World War, the entire development of the shield and its surroundings were destroyed by a devastating attack by the British Air Force at the end of April 1942 . A rebuilding did not take place, and the historic street lines were abandoned. At the location of the former sign there is now a green area and a pedestrian path that leads from Neuer Markt to Krämerstraße .

The urban design for the development of the north side of the Neuer Markt, selected by a committee of the Hanseatic City of Rostock in 2014, provides for Am Schilde to be rebuilt as a square. The south side of the square is intended for another Rauthaus extension . To compensate for the steep incline within the square, the design provides for a combination of flat surfaces and stairs and ramps.
