Amalia was the youngest child and sixth daughter of the British King George III. (1738-1820) and his wife, Princess Sophie Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1744-1818), daughter of Prince Carl of Mecklenburg and Princess Elisabeth Albertine of Saxony-Hildburghausen . She was her father's favorite daughter and was called "Emily" in the family. The princess was baptized on September 17, 1783 by John Moore, Archbishop of Canterbury , in the Great Council Chamber of St James's Palace . Her godparents were her eldest brother, the Prince of Wales , her eldest sister the Princess Royal and her second eldest sister Princess Augusta .

In 1795, Amalia fell ill with tuberculosis and was slow to recover from the disease. She later suffered from a painful skin infection, sore throat . She and her sisters, Charlotte Auguste , Augusta Sophia, Elisabeth , Maria and Sophia Mathilda , were raised in a strictly shielded manner at Windsor Castle .

Princess Amalia fell in love with the stable master, Sir Charles Fitzroy (1762–1831), son of Charles Fitzroy, 1st Baron Southampton, in 1803. Marriage was ruled out by her mother and the Royal Marriages Act of 1772.

Princess Amalia died on November 2, 1810 at Windsor Castle and was buried in St. George's Chapel. Her death was a shock; her father's state of health ( porphyria ) was deteriorating and he had to be locked up at Windsor Castle for his own safety. During the last years of his life, George III grazed. - blind and apparently mentally deranged - aimlessly through the rooms of an apartment furnished for him at Windsor Castle.
