The Amazonas 1600 was a motorcycle from the Brazilian manufacturer Amazonas Motos Especiais , which was manufactured in Manaus from 1978 to 1990 .

History and technology

When the import of foreign motor vehicles to Brazil ceased in 1976, there was a need for nationally manufactured motorcycles. Since until then only much smaller motorcycles had been made in Brazil, the Amazon was received with enthusiasm. In 1978 the company Amazonas Motocicletas Especiais - AME began producing the Amazonas in three versions: a civil, military and police version. The Amazonas was officially manufactured until 1990, continuously modified in the course of production and exported to various countries. The massive motorcycle was powered by the engine of the VW Beetle and the disc brake system was also provided by VW.

The 7.2: 1 compressed, air-cooled four-cylinder boxer engine with two valves per cylinder was supplied with fuel by two 32 mm Solex carburetors. The displacement was 1584 cm³; the power of the civil version was given with up to 54 hp, the police version should have reached 68 hp at 4600 min −1 . The consumption was given as 10 liters per 100 km. The fan-cooled boxer engine was installed lengthways in the double loop frame and the clutch was converted to manual operation.

"The Amazon had the elegance and performance of a truck."
