Amazonas Motos Especiais , or AME for short , was a Brazilian manufacturer of motorcycles and automobiles .

Company history

The company was based in São Paulo . In 1978 the production of motorcycles began in factories in São Paulo and Manaus . The brand name was Amazonas . The vehicles were also exported to the USA , Europe and Japan . In 1986 there was a change of ownership. From 1987 onwards, automobiles and kit cars were also produced . Production ended in 1988. A total of around 700 motorcycles and a few cars were built.

Large motorcycles, similar to those from Harley-Davidson , were on offer . An air-cooled four - cylinder boxer engine from Volkswagen do Brasil with a displacement of 1600 cm³ propelled the vehicles. A sidecar was available from 1982 .

In March 1987 the replica of the Porsche 550 was presented at an automobile exhibition. The license came from Chuck Beck. A tubular frame formed the basis. An open body made of fiberglass was mounted on top. The VW engine with either 1600 cm³, 1800 cm³ or 2160 cm³ displacement was placed behind the seats in a mid-engine design . The plan was to produce 10 to 16 vehicles per month. Production of this model ended in the same year when Beck decided to grant the license to Chamonix NG Cars .

A replica of a Ford Thunderbird was also planned.
