Companhia Industrial Santa Matilde was a Brazilian company and manufacturer of automobiles .

Company history

The company was founded in Conselheiro Lafaiete in 1916 as a mining company. Later, railroad cars were repaired and electrically powered locomotives were made. In 1959 the production of tractors , bulldozers and combine harvesters was added.

A department of the company began producing automobiles in Rio de Janeiro in 1977 . The brand name was Santa Matilde . Series production ended in 1987. Unique pieces were still around until 1997.

In the 1980s, the production of buses was added.

Bankruptcy followed in October 2005 .

Automobiles

The first model was the SM 4.1 . The sports car had a chassis made of steel , and a body made of fiberglass . The hatchback coupe offered space for 2 + 2 people. A six-cylinder engine from the Chevrolet Opala with 4093 cm³ displacement and 171  hp was mounted in the front of the vehicle and drove the rear wheels. In 1980 and 1983 there were small revisions.

A convertible was available from 1984.

The last vehicle from 1997 was a one-off with an engine from the Chevrolet Omega with 3000 cc.

Production numbers

For the first two years, 238 vehicles have been delivered. 147 vehicles were built in 1980 and 57 in the following year. During the next four years there were also around 50 vehicles per year. 1986 was the best year with 207 vehicles produced. In 1987 the number went down to 25 and in 1988 to eight.

A total of 937 vehicles were built, including 76 convertibles .
