Ambilobe is a town and administrative center of the district of the same name Ambilobe , part of the Diana region , in the Antsiranana province in northwest Madagascar . The place is on the national road 6 between Ambanja and Antsiranana and on the Mahavavy river . According to an estimate from 2005, the city had 14,425 inhabitants.

Agriculture and food production account for 40% and 35% of employment respectively. The most important crop is sugar cane , and cotton , rice and tomatoes are also grown. Only 13% and 2% of the population are employed in industry and services. In fishing every tenth operates.

There are elementary and secondary schools as well as hospital care.

Ambilobe is a center of the epidemic, rat flea- borne plague in Madagascar . Particularly colorful chameleons like the panther chameleon live in the remains of the jungle.

Albert Zafy , President of Madagascar from 1993 to 1996, was born in Ambilobe.

Ambilobe Airport ( IATA : AMB, ICAO : FMNE) is west of the city on the coastal plain.
