The ambon scorpionfish ( Pteroidichthys amboinensis ) is a bottom-living marine fish from the family of scorpion fish (Scorpaenidae) and is the only species of the genus Pteroidichthys (name: because of similarity to Pterois ).
distribution
It lives disjunct in the Red Sea and in the western Indo-Pacific near Indonesia ( Sulawesi , Ambon to Bali ), New Guinea , Japan , Ryukyu , Saipan , Vietnam and Madras , mainly on soft soils and in algae fields at depths of 3 to 50 meters.
features
The animals, camouflaged with a variety of outgrowths, can be yellow, brown, green or red, depending on the species of algae that predominate in their habitat. Pteroidichthys amboinensis becomes twelve centimeters long. They have large fringed skin tentacles over their upright eyes, and the rest of the body is camouflaged with skin fringes. The mouth points diagonally upwards. The anal fin of the fish has two hard rays and 6½ soft rays. With the help of the pectoral and pelvic fins , it can slowly crawl across the sea floor.
