American Affairs is an American political magazine with a conservative and populist - globalization-critical orientation. It has been published quarterly in Boston since April 2017 .

History and direction

American Affairs was founded by Harvard graduate Julius Krein in spring 2017 . At the presentation of the magazine at the New York Harvard Club , the investor Peter Thiel and the feminist publicist Anne-Marie Slaughter held a panel discussion, and the neo-conservative intellectual William Kristol was also among the guests. Krein said the task of the magazine was "not just to rethink the theoretical foundations of 'conservatism', but to encourage a major realignment of American politics." It was founded shortly after Donald Trump was elected US president at this point interpreted as an attempt to "build an intellectual foundation for the Trump movement".

Kerin turned his back on the President after the events in Charlottesville in August 2017 and penned a sensational guest commentary in the New York Times entitled "I voted Trump and I regret it bitterly." Trump's behavior is "stupid and nauseating". However, according to Krein, he himself will continue to try to “pull some good ideas out of the ruins of the Trump presidency”.

While the magazine still takes a conservative-populist stance, it has recently been described as a “collection point for all types of deviant thinking”. In terms of economic policy, the magazine is critical of free trade and globalization and advocates - based on the American system of political economy of the first US Treasury Secretary, Alexander Hamilton - a protectionist policy that primarily aims to reduce industrial capacities in the USA and concentrate on Silicon Valley - rejects technologies and financial markets.

Authors

Authors and supporters of American Affairs include Republican Senator Marco Rubio , David P. Goldman , Ryszard Legutko, and Michael Anton . Especially with regard to its anti-globalization and elite-critical orientation, the magazine also serves as a platform for left-wing authors such as Colin Crouch , Heiner Flassbeck and Slavoj Zizek .
