American Splendor is an American comic book magazine published by Harvey Pekar since 1976 , who also wrote all published stories. The drawings are by various artists, including Robert Crumb .

Pekar always describes events and people from his personal environment. This is how his wife Joyce Brabner and their adopted daughter Danielle appear. In addition to problems with friends and family, this also includes everyday money or health problems.

The greatest success was the volume Our Cancer Year , created with his wife, about the cancer of Pekar, in which he tried to portray every aspect of the disease as truthfully as possible, including suicidal thoughts. The stories have been widely published and edited in book form.

publication

The magazine has been published at irregular intervals since 1976, 39 issues have appeared so far, the last in September 2008. At first, Pekar self-published the issues, from 1994 to 2002 Dark Horse Comics took over the publication. In 2006 and 2008 two four-part miniseries for American Splendor were published by Vertigo . Since 1986 a total of six collective editions have been published by various publishers.

Several graphic novels appeared for the series , which were published by different publishers.

filming

In 2003 an award-winning film adaptation was made under the title American Splendor . The role of Pekar was played by Paul Giamatti , Joyce Brabner was played by Hope Davis . Directed by Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman.

Awards

The book Our Cancer Year has been awarded the 1995 Harvey Award awarded for the best graphic novel.
