The American Staghound is - depending on your point of view - a dog breed or a hybrid dog from the USA . It is a working dog for hunting larger game. His name is composed of Engl . Stag (male deer ) and hound together.

Origin and history

The American Staghound is descended from Deerhound , Greyhound and Irish Wolfhound . Its existence has been proven since the 18th century at the latest , for example the first President of the United States, George Washington , held three American Staghounds. Even General Custer was an admirer of these dogs, holding a pack.

The American Staghound is a tough, wire-haired greyhound . With a weight of 29 to 45 kg it reaches a height at the withers of 63 to 84 cm and is represented in several colors.

Staghounds are both mated with one another and repeatedly bred by crossing the above greyhound breeds ( longdog ). Since the American Staghound is not recognized by any major breed association and recognition is not sought, its definition as a breed is controversial.
