List of domestic dogs |
A longdog is a hybrid dog that is the result of mating two or more greyhound breeds . Thus it is not a dog breed in the strict sense, but a crossbreed of hybrid breeding . The longdog must be distinguished from the lurcher , which is a cross between a greyhound and another breed of dog.
Appearance
Since a longdog can be bred from all greyhound breeds, its size, weight and coat are very variable. What all Longdogs have in common, however, is the greyhound-like physique, i.e. long legs, deep chest, well-drawn stomach, long neck and strong muscles.
use
Longdogs were originally bred to hunt rabbits and sometimes larger animals (wolves, deer, coyotes) - the American Staghound is an example of this . In Central Europe they are mainly used for coursing , as sight hunting is prohibited in most countries. Longdogs are usually pleasant family dogs, but have a strong hunting instinct.
