List of domestic dogs

The Saluki is a breed of dogs recognized by the FCI ( FCI Group 10, Section 1, Standard No. 269 ). The English language standard states the Middle East as the origin of the breed .

Origin and history

The Saluki or Persian Greyhound is a greyhound of the oriental type, which is characterized by a muscular, slim physique. It comes from the Orient, possibly it goes back to Egyptian dogs like the Tesem . The breed has been preserved under the same conditions in its countries of origin for thousands of years. The Arab Bedouins began breeding Salukis even before the famous Arabian horses were raised .

The origin of the word Saluki is the same as that of the word Sloughi . In Arabic , they are pronunciation variants of the same word that means greyhound.

Originally, the Saluki was bred for gazelle and hare hunting . Good hunting Salukis are highly valued by Muslims, unlike other dogs, because they can contribute a lot to the family's food acquisition. In literature, the Saluki is therefore also referred to as a gift from Allah . The Salukis are considered family members and are allowed to sleep in their masters' tents.

description

The Saluki grows up to 71 cm and is bred to be feathered and short-haired in the two strokes , the feathered stroke being more common. It differs from the short-haired Saluki in the longer hair ( feathering ) on the legs, tail and ears with otherwise short body hair, in which the entire body hair including tail and ears is uniformly short and smooth.

Both coat types come in the colors of cream, black, chocolate (brown), red (with and without black ear fringes), black & tan / black & silver (black with tan / black with silver), fawn (fawn, sand) brindle, tricolor and grizzle of all variations, with almost all color varieties with or without a mask. There are also white Salukis, albeit rarely, but they are to be counted among the piebalds, as a dark spot can be found somewhere on the body (so-called extreme piebalds ). Otherwise, really pure white Salukis are likely to be mutations or extremely light creams.
