List of domestic dogs

The Sloughi is an FCI- recognized breed of dog from North Africa ( Morocco ) ( FCI Group 10, Section 3, Standard No. 188 ).

Origin and history

The Sloughi dog breed is a very old breed of greyhound from North Africa, which is counted among the oriental greyhounds. Dogs of this type have been depicted on Egyptian wall reliefs that are more than three thousand years old . Even older evidence of smooth-haired, lop-eared greyhounds comes from the heyday of the Mesopotamian Empire. Sand-colored, black and brindle greyhounds hunting African game were also shown on old historical mosaics from North Africa from the time of the birth of Christ. The Sloughi is traditionally the hunting dog of the nomadic tribes of North Africa, the Berbers and the Bedouins . Major sheikhs had large Sloughi breeds. The Sloughis were taken along on the hunt , accompanied by trained falcons , sitting in the saddle in front of the riders. The first reports of the Sloughi reached Europe through the explorers and travelers who began to explore the previously closed Arab world at the beginning of the 19th century.

Race name and genetic demarcation

The European names for the independent races Sloughi and Saluki come from the Arabic words Slughi (colloquial Arabic) and Saluki (classical Arabic). They both mean the same thing, which is greyhound. The races are differentiated in Arabic with an addition, namely Slughi-moghrebi for the Sloughi breed described here and Slughi-shami (feathered Saluki) or Slughi-nedji (short-haired Saluki). The Sloughi (Slughi-moghrebi = greyhound originating from the Maghreb) comes from Morocco, Tunisia, Libya and Algeria, where it can still be found today. The default country is Morocco. Although, according to mtDNA studies, greyhounds are all grouped into the same cluster and they differ little genetically, there are characteristic differences in the mtDNA between greyhounds from western Southwest Asia (to which the Saluki belongs) and those in eastern Southwest Asia (including Afghans and Taigan ) or in North Africa ( Azawakh , Sloughi).

description

The Sloughi is a typical oriental type of greyhound that is lightly built and can grow up to 72 cm. Its fur is very short, dense and fine. All color shades from light-sand to red-sand are possible, with or without a black mask, with or without a black coat, with or without black currents, with or without black clouds. The Sloughi has a noble-looking head with hanging or slightly folded ears, a long neck, a streamlined body shape with precise, straight lines and a deep, spacious chest. The abdomen, on the other hand, is strongly tucked up. The Sloughi is long-legged and stands on strong feet. The look out of the black-rimmed eyes gives him a melancholy expression. As with all greyhounds, the gait is noticeable: supple and light-footed, the steps wide and expansive. Over long distances he prefers the elegant trot , while sprinting he goes over to canter .

Essence

Sloughis are powerful, tough and robust and have no problems with large temperature fluctuations. The Sloughi is an affectionate, adaptable housemate. He is very close to man and is faithful to his Lord. Like most greyhounds , he is reserved with strangers . His manner is described as clever and noble , his manners as noble and proud .

use

The Sloughi is used in its homeland to hunt rabbits and gazelles. Sloughis feel comfortable with their families and are therefore suitable as companion and family dogs.

Diseases

Hereditary progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) occurs in the Sloughi . A recessive inheritance has been demonstrated. A genetic test is available.
