The taigan is not from the FCI recognized dog breed from Kyrgyzstan . The Association for German Dogs recognized the breed at national level in 2014, it is looked after by the German Greyhound Breeding and Racing Association ( DWZRV ).

Origin and history

The Kyrgyz greyhound Taigan, like the Azawakh , Sloughi , Saluki , Afghan Hound and Central Asian Tazi, is one of the oriental greyhound breeds that are common from North Africa to the Central Asian region. Since the Kyrgyz are a nomadic people who have repeatedly changed their settlement area in the course of their history, it is likely to be difficult to make precise statements about the origin of this race. In its current form, however, the Taigan is a decidedly high mountain breed, adapted to the work in its homeland, the high mountain regions of Tianshan .

In the thirties the population was first recorded by Soviet cynologists , a work that was then interrupted by the Second World War. In 1964, a breed standard for the taigan was put into effect in what was then the Soviet Union . Hunting with greyhounds enjoyed a certain amount of support in the Soviet Union; the hunters were organized in kolkhozes and had to deliver fixed amounts of skins for their prey.

After Kyrgyzstan gained its independence in 1991 with the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the role of race changed: The collapse of many industries and collectivized agriculture led many Kyrgyz people to return to the nomadic way of life of their ancestors. Hunting with the taigan helps many of them secure a livelihood. In contrast, the taigan has been discovered as a prestigious symbol of Kyrgyz culture in the newly emerging urban upper class. The Kynological Council of the Kyrgyz Republic (an authority assigned to the Ministry of Agriculture) adopted a new breed standard in 1995 and several breeding shows were held in Bishkek .

The breed has not yet been recognized by the FCI, the Union of Cynologists of Kyrgyz Republic (UCKR) became a contractual partner of the FCI in October 2009, which only created the basis for possible recognition.

description

The taigan is at least 65 cm (bitches at least 60 cm) tall greyhound in the colors black, black with white markings, gray, brown and pale yellow, white. Areas of dark colored fur may have white markings. The hair of the dogs is soft, long and dense, in winter an undercoat develops. The ears are pendulous, thick and without folds. A special feature of the taigan is the typical curl at the end of the rod - the last links have grown together so that the curl cannot be unrolled.

Due to its large lung volume, its very strong bones compared to other greyhounds and its thick fur, the taigan is able to hunt at heights of up to 4000 meters.

use

Hunting dog, hunting dog for the game of the mountains. Typical prey animals are ibex , roe deer , wolves , foxes and marmots . Some hunters use the taigan for coordinated hunting with the golden eagle . The taigan is rarely used to hunt the Central Asian hare (Tolai).

Due to the rugged terrain of its region of origin, the taigan, unlike most other greyhounds, hunts not only with the eyes but with all of their senses.
