The American Yorkshire is a breed of pig from the United States .

Breeding history

The American Yorkshire pig is the US version of the English Yorkshire pig . In 1830 the first Yorkshire pigs were imported into the USA, mainly to Ohio . The poor growth performance of these animals kept their numbers low. It wasn't until the late 1940s that Yorkshire pigs were imported and crossbred from Canada and England . The meat production increased by leaps and bounds.

  • good muscling with a high proportion of lean meat
  • most common breed of pig in the USA

Occurrence today

Today, American Yorkshire can be found in almost every US state, but most notably in Illinois , Indiana , Iowa , Nebraska, and Ohio .
