Ames Florida House in Rockford, Minnesota

The Ames-Florida House is a house on the Crow River in Rockford , Minnesota . It was built in 1856 by George F. Ames and his brother-in-law, Joel Florida. Both were from New England and had come to Minnesota by steamboat from northern Illinois . On the way they met Guilford George, a carpenter and machine fitter . The three men formed a partnership and founded the town of Rockford, which was grouped around a sawmill and a flour mill .

The house is one of the few houses in Minnesota that was built as a half-timbered house before this type of construction became widespread in the Midwest . Windows and doors were made on site, as was the interior wall paneling, which was sawn from trees felled on the property. Several pieces of furniture were also created with hand tools at this point. These have been preserved and are on display in the house that is now a museum.

Ames lived in the house until 1878. He then withdrew from the business due to health problems and sold it with his shares to Joel Florida, who lived in it with two of his three sisters, mother and aunt until he died in 1936. The Stork couple bought it after his death. They were interested in historical objects, recognized the historical importance of the house and tried to preserve it. The house was donated to the city in 1986 and added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 16, 1979 .
