The Ara Project
The Ara Project is a Costa Rican licensed zoological park and non-profit organization (formerly known as Amigos de las Aves ).

The Ara Project is dedicated to the preservation of two native macaw TYPES Costa Rica: the critically endangered Great Green Macaw ( Ara ambiguus ), also called Bechsteinara, and the Scarlet Macaw ( Ara macao ), also called Arakanga.
The Ara project combines breeding methods and aviary management for the purpose of carrying out controlled reintroduction programs in cooperation with the laws of Costa Rica's animal and species protection, created and controlled by MINAET (Ministerio de Ambiente, Energía y Telecomunicaciones), the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Telecommunications .
The Macaw Project has so far released 80 Scarlet Macaws on its release sites.
The Macaw Project will start a release program for the Great Soldier Macaw ( Ara ambiguus ) in 2011 .
history
In the 1980s, retired American emigrants, Margot and Richard Frisius, began looking after parrots confiscated by the government and given away by private owners . In 1992 they started an official breeding program for the two native species of macaws in Costa Rica. For this purpose the non-profit organization “Amigos de las Aves” (Friends of the Birds) was set up.
Over the years the largest population of Great Soldier Macaws in captivity and a functioning release program of Scarlet Macaws have developed.
In 2008 Margot Frisius died and the Frisius family decided to hand over the organization to the trust fund, known since 2009 as "The Ara Project", to continue their project.
The Macaw Project has a new concept for the conservation of macaws, while maintaining the vision of the Frisius family and their successful technique, based on years of experience in breeding and reintroducing macaws.
