Amikam Norkin ( Hebrew עמיקם נורקין; * December 20, 1966 ) is an Israeli general. He is currently the commander of the Israeli Air Force (IAF) with the rank of major general (Aluf).

life and career

Norkin was in Beit She'arim ( 32 ° 41 '46.3 "  N , 35 ° 10' 38.3"  O born) in the north of Israel as descendant Romanian Jewish immigrants. He was drafted into the army in 1984 and successfully completed his training as a fighter pilot at the IAF flight academy in July 1987 . In 1988 he went to the 133rd Squadron Twin Tail Knights at the Tel Nof airfield and became the world's youngest F-15 pilot at the age of 21 . In the early 1990s he flew the F-4E Phantom Kurnass from the Chazerim military airfield and took part in the bombing raids against Hezbollah in Lebanon at the end of July 1993 ( Operation Responsibility ). A few years later he was appointed first deputy chief of the 140th Squadron Golden Eagle ( F-16C / D ) at the Nevatim military airfield and in April 1996 was again involved in the days of air strikes on Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon ( Operation The Fruits of Wrath ). In the following years he became head of IAF operational planning.

Between 1999 and 2002, Norkin returned to Tel Nof as commander of the Twin Tail Knights F-15 squadron. In 2003 he was commissioned to integrate the new F-16I Sufa fighter aircraft into the IAF, as commander of the 253rd Squadron Negev at the Ramon military airfield . From 2009 to 2012 Norkin was then Brigadier General in command of Tel Nof Airbase. He was then appointed head of the IAF Training and Doctrine Department. In August 2014 he became chief of staff of the IAF, but only until June 2015, when he was appointed major general and head of IDF operational planning. On August 10, 2017, he became the commander of the Israeli Air Force, succeeding Amir Eshel .
