Hubert Baumgärtel

Walter Hubert Baumgärtel (born October 27, 1885 in Berlin ; died there in December 1973 ) was a German art historian and publisher .

Life

Baumgärtel was the son of the art historian and publisher Max Baumgärtel (1852–1925). From January 1, 1914, he worked for volume 10 on the editorial team of the General Lexicon of Fine Artists from Antiquity to the Present , and for volumes 11-12, 14-15 and 20 he wrote articles. On November 9, 1914, he married Elise Jenny (née Goldschmidt), who later worked as an Egyptologist , and with whom he had three daughters. They lived in Berlin-Zehlendorf at Königstrasse 32. Both joined the German Oriental Society in 1923 . In 1922 he joined the “Euphorion-Verlag Dr.” together with the art historian Ernst Rathenau (1898–1986). Abraham Horodisch & Siegfried Pfankuch ”and worked as managing director. At the publishing house he was primarily interested in expressionist graphics and he was responsible for expanding this branch of publishing activities. The publishing business was expanded to include the Euphorion art dealer. In 1925 he left the management. His marriage was unhappy and divorced in 1929. He never met his maintenance obligations. From 1937 to 1940 Baumgärtel was the owner of the "Historischen Verlag Baumgärtel" in Berlin, which had existed since 1897 and was founded by his father. In 1959 he lived in Berlin-Wilmersdorf, Uhlandstraße 78.
