from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Film Music Journal is an online magazine about film music in German from Switzerland . The editor is Philippe Blumenthal. The authors come from Switzerland and Germany .

history

The magazine was founded in Switzerland in 1993 by the Swiss Film Music Society as their “official organ” and fanzine with the idea of regularly reviewing film music that appears on sound carriers in German .

First a printed newsletter was published and shortly afterwards the first printed booklet came out under the title The Film Music Journal , which at that time was still produced by hand in the copy shop . Active film music fans gradually supported the magazine as authors and subscribers. Hundreds of CD reviews have been written and interviews published with film composers such as Bruce Broughton , Robert Folk , David Arnold , Maurice Jarre , John Barry , Elliot Goldenthal , Michael Kamen , Éric Serra, and James Newton Howard .

Every year, the film music of the year was awarded the "Score of the Year Award", for example 1992 Basic Instinct by Jerry Goldsmith , 2003 The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King by Howard Shore and 2005 Memoirs of a Geisha by John Williams .

In 2005 the subscribers were taken over by the German magazine for film music Cinema Musica , the printed medium was discontinued.

New start as an online magazine

In 2009 there was a new start as a non-commercial online magazine with the former authors of the printed magazine. Films released on DVD and Blu-ray were also discussed here and leaderboards were introduced, for example “The best film music for Halloween” and the annual top ten list of authors. In Film Music - An Alternative Compendium , the Film Music Journal is listed as a film music website in 2018.

As of March 2019, more than 700 CD reviews are available in the categories “Current Film Music”, “Golden Age” and “In Brief”.
