Amnioscopy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The amnioscopy or amniotic fluid reflection is an examination in obstetrics that can only be carried out when the cervix is (slightly) open . The amniotic fluid can be viewed through the membranes through an endoscope , which is passed through the slightly opened cervix. The color of the amniotic fluid allows conclusions to be drawn about the condition of the fetus / fetus . The normal amniotic fluid is colorless. If the fetus is under stress, it will in many cases have a bowel movement ( child pecking ), which turns the amniotic fluid greenish. After a certain time, the color changes more and more to yellow. Such a finding can be a reason to induce labor .

The amnioscopy was developed by Erich Saling in 1961/62 .

One problem with amnioscopy is that it produces false negative results in up to 57% of examinations. Even with the most severe metabolic acidosis, the false-negative rate is 32%. There is also the risk that the examination could trigger premature labor or rupture of the bladder. Since the mid-1990s, amnioscopy has been increasingly replaced by electronic heart rate monitoring and sonographic controls.
