The museum owes its name to the newspaper publisher Amos Anderson , owner of the Hufvudstadsbladet and an important art patron. In 1913, Anderson commissioned the architect Wäinö Palmqvist in Einar Sjöström to design a building that would house both his apartment and office space. After his death in 1961, the building was converted into a museum, which opened in 1965.
The art museum's collection includes around 6,000 works, primarily paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints and photos. The museum focuses on the 20th century. The oldest works are from Anderson's personal collection. This is where textile, furniture, glass and ceramics collections come from. The collection of the architect and art critic Sigurd Frosterus (1876–1956) is also located there. It owns paintings by Francesco Bassano ( Adoration of the Magi ), Paul Signac , Louis Valtat , Roger Fry , Willy Finch ( face on Fiesole ), Ragnar Ekelund, Magnus Enckell , Eero Nelimarkka , Tyko Sallinen and Tove Jansson ( Fantasy ). When it comes to new purchases, the museum focuses on Finnish modernism and other art in various forms.
