Life
Anderson came from a humble background. After attending elementary school, he completed a business school. He then continued his education in Göttingen and London , where he studied economics and insurance. He returned to Finland and published an insurance magazine. In 1906 he founded the business magazine Mercator . In 1909 he founded a printing company of the same name. He then worked in other areas of the graphic industry. In 1916 he became the majority owner of the Tilgman printing company . In 1920 he took over the newspaper Hufvudstadsbladet , of which he was editor-in-chief from 1928 to 1936.
Anderson, who had made his fortune in this way, acted as a patron . In a special way he supported the Åbo Akademi in Turku and at the end of the 1920s partly financed the construction of the Helsinki Art Hall . In the 1930s, he made possible the restoration of the medieval churches of Pargas , Kimito and Turku, as well as the renovation of the Swedish theater in Helsinki .
In 1927 he bought the Söderlångvik estate on his home island Kimito . It covers an area of 6000 hectares with a coastline of 100 kilometers.
Anderson wrote the mystery play Vallis Gratiae and a work on medieval church art in Finland, translated into several languages. He played a decisive role in the founding of the Finnish Institute in Rome and in the acquisition of the Villa Lante on Gianicolo Hill, which served as the institute's headquarters .
He left no direct heirs. His extensive fortune went to the Föreningen Konstamfundet Foundation he founded in 1940 . In addition to real estate, the foundation also owns investments in companies such as Hufvudstadsbladet and the Stockmann department store , through which there are investments in various other companies. The Amos Anderson Art Museum is housed in his former private home.
