Eero Nelimarkka

Eero Aleksander Nelimarkka (born October 10, 1891 in Vaasa , † January 27, 1977 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish painter . He is best known for depicting the flat landscapes of Ostrobothnia known as Lakeus . He also made portraits of well-known Finns and family members.

biography

Eero Nelimarkka was born in Vaasa, Finland, as the son of tailors Erkki Nelimarkka and Maria Nelimarkka (née Koivukangas). In 1912 he studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and the Académie Julian in Paris.

In 1945 he, now a professor and artist, founded the "Nelimarkka Foundation", whose task it is to this day to maintain and promote the production and life's work of Eero Nelimarkka. The Finnish essayist JA Hollo was one of the co-founders.

In 1964 he built the Nelimarkka Museum on his father's homestead in Alajärvi in southern Ostrobothnia . The museum's core collection, around 1,700 works, is owned by the Nelimarkka Foundation.

Nelimarkka is buried in the Hietaniemi Cemetery in Helsinki.
