The municipal district office for the 20th district is a listed official building of the city of Vienna .

history

Brigittenau official building in the year it opened, 1906

In 1900 the 20th district of Brigittenau was separated from the 2nd district of Leopoldstadt . In March 1902, the jury was appointed for an architecture competition initiated two years earlier for a separate district office for the new district, which included the architect and Viennese councilor Julius Deininger (1852-1924) and, as a representative of the Secession artists' association , Otto Wagner (1841 –1918) belonged. Of the twenty projects submitted in autumn 1902, none was awarded a prize, but the competitor Karl Badstieber (1875–1942) was commissioned in April 1903 to work out a new design. Badstieber, who had just finished his architecture studies a few years earlier and had not yet received any public construction contracts, was assigned the architectural work in February 1904 , which had to be implemented from April 25, 1904. After completion of the construction and the move-in of the affected authorities, the house was inaugurated on May 7, 1906.

During the Second World War , the municipal district office was badly damaged and then restored.

Location and architecture

Transition between the district office (left) and Manfred-Ackermann-Hof

The municipal district office for the 20th district is located at Brigittaplatz No. 10. Brigittaplatz, where the neo-Gothic Brigittakirche by architect Friedrich von Schmidt is located, was designed as the urban center of the district. Next to the district office is a communal residential building, the Manfred-Ackermann-Hof, in which the Brigittenau fire station is integrated. It was also built according to plans by Karl Badstieber, but only in 1928/1929. With this building, the architect referred to the architectural design language of the district office. It also visually connects to the district office.

The facade design of the official building is characterized by contemporary secessionist elements with historically older, neo-Gothic echoes. Decor made of clinker brick, stone and metal is attached to the facade. The main portal is formed by a round arch made of natural stone. Inside, the ballroom, the marble wall fountain and the wrought-iron banister are to be highlighted.
