Aníbal de Bettencourt

Aníbal de Bettencourt (born June 21, 1868 in Angra do Heroísmo , † January 9, 1930 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese doctor and bacteriologist.

Career

Bettencourt was born in the Azores as the son of Nicolau Moniz de Bettencourt (* 1836) and Francisca Virgínia da Cunha da Silveira de Bettencourt (* 1841) . He completed his studies in medicine at the Escola Médico-Cirúrgica in Lisbon in 1892 .

Continuing the work of Luís da Câmara Pestana , he became one of the pioneers in Portugal in the study of infectious diseases and in the field of microbiology. In 1899 he took over as director of the Real Instituto Bacteriológico in Lisbon, founded by Câmara Pestana . From 1911 on, he was the first holder of the newly created chair in bacteriology and parasitology at the Medical Faculty of the University of Lisbon .
