An analog front end (AFE) is an integrated circuit for converting and processing analog signals . AFEs are mainly used for digital processing of the data received from sensors . An AFE circuit can contain different elements for amplifying, processing, filtering and processing data from different types of signal sources as well as one or more analog-digital converters .

AFE modules often have several input channels. Examples of highly integrated AFEs are the ADS1298, AFE4400 and AFE4490 from Texas Instruments used in medical technology and health monitoring, or the Atmel CN209, which is installed as an AFE unit in smart meters .
