Ancamna

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ancamna is a Gallo-Roman water and spring goddess of Celtic mythology , who was especially venerated in parts of the Moselle valley , in Trier ( Augusta Treverorum , temple district Irminenwingert ) and Ripsdorf together with Mars Lenus , in Möhn with Mars Smertulianus.

Lore

Ancamna's altars in Trier were dedicated to the worship of Mars as were other genii of Treveri . It is obvious, therefore, to see a tribal deity in Ancamna. Votive offerings for Ancamna, Mars Smertulianus and a local Genius cucullatus were found in the sanctuary of Möhn . In Luxembourg excavators found a bronze ex voto for Inciona and Lenus Mars Veraudunus ; a connection between Ancamna and Inciona is suspected, but is currently not clearly demonstrable.
