Ancient Domains of Mystery ( ADOM for short ) is an English-language, rogue-like computer game , the first version of which was released in 1994 and which is still being developed today.

action

ADOM is set in the Drakalor Chain mountain region within the fantasy world of Ancardia. After 6000 years of peace, frightening phenomena appear: dangerous cave systems open up and unknown monsters invade the mountainous region. The magician Khelavaster discovers an ancient prophecy that says that the forces of Chaos will invade Ancardia and that the remote Drakalor Chain will be the scene of a battle between the forces of Chaos and an unknown hero, with the latter triumphing. Numerous heroes are sent in vain to fulfill the prophecy. The player is another one of those adventurers. Depending on how you play, ADOM has different endings ready for the player.

In the original version, the game only consists of colored ASCII characters. Most dungeons are generated randomly when you first enter and do not change afterwards. As is typical for rogue-like games, the player can set his hero's attributes (gender, race and class) at the beginning of the game, which will develop further in the course of the game. Unlike most rogue-like games, ADOM has a much larger story component. The player often gets quests that he can complete and that advance the story.

Production notes

ADOM has been programmed by Thomas Biskup from Gelsenkirchen since 1994; Programming language is C . The game is freeware . Development paused between 2003 and 2012, but was resumed due to the game's continued popularity. In the meantime, the long-announced successor JADE (Java-based Ancient Domains Engine, a Java implementation) has been published. In November 2015, a paid version of ADOM was made available on the Steam download platform , including graphic elements and background music .

In January 2019, designer Thomas Biskup started a crowdfunding campaign on the Kickstarter platform with the aim of raising 5,000 euros to finance the development of a pen & paper role-playing game based on the ADOM regulations. Within four weeks, the campaign raised over 20,000 euros from supporters. A publication of the role play has been scheduled by Biskup for August 2020. In July 2019, he announced that he would no longer be able to work on the pen & paper role-playing game due to professional changes and that he would pay off the supporters.
