Ancistronycha abdominalis is a beetle fromthe soft beetle family (Cantharidae). The genus Ancistronycha is represented in Europe with 6 species, in Central Europe 3 species occur.

features

The beetles are 11 to 14.5 millimeters long. They have a variable color. The head is red-brown in front and black behind the eyes. The elytra are black with a blue-violet to blue-green metallic sheen. The pronotum is seldom red in males, but always red in females. Sometimes the red pronotum has a black front and back edge or is bordered with black all around, or the black pronotum has red side flaws. The aedoeagus is without a dorsal shield.

distribution

Ancistronycha abdominalis occurs mainly in Western and Central Europe. The distribution area of ​​the beetle species extends in the north to Great Britain (including Scotland ) and in Germany in the north to the Harz . In eastern Central Europe the occurrence of the species extends to Poland, Slovakia and Hungary . In southern Europe the distribution area extends from Spain via France and Italy to Bulgaria.

Way of life

The beetles are mainly found in forest areas and in low mountain ranges. The flight time lasts from May to July. The beetles feed mainly in a predatory manner.
