Walter Raymond Stokes (born May 23, 1898 in Mohawk , † June 9, 1996 in Stuart ) was an American sports marksman .

successes

Walter Stokes took part in the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris in seven disciplines. With the free rifle he was in team competition together with Morris Fisher , Raymond Coulter , Joseph Crockett and Sidney Hinds before the teams of France and Haiti's Olympic champion . In the individual he just missed another medal win in fourth place, with the small caliber he was tenth in the prone position. In the running deer discipline , he also reached tenth place in the single shot and twelfth place in the double shot. In the team competitions he was fifth in the double shot, while he won the bronze medal in the single shot together with John Boles , Dennis Fenton and Raymond Coulter.

At world championships , Stokes was very successful with a total of 17 medals. He became world champion eleven times: in 1921 he won the individual titles in Lyon with the free rifle in three-position combat, in the prone position, in the standing position and in the kneeling position. He was also successful with the team in the three-position battle. He defended the team title both in Milan in 1922 and in Camp Perry in 1923 and in Reims in 1924 . In 1922 he also won individual titles in the three-position fight and in the kneeling position, in 1924 he won the gold medal in the prone position. In addition, Stokes secured five silver medals and one bronze medal.

Stokes graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1918 and received both a Bachelor of Laws and a Doctor of Medicine from George Washington University .
