The Ancona is a breed of domestic chicken and takes its name from the Italian province of Ancona . Due to its relationship to the Leghorn , it is also referred to as the "black Leghorn" and counted among the laying races . British breeders brought this landrace to Great Britain in the 19th century and from there it made its way to other European countries and the USA. Due to its high laying performance of around 220 white eggs per year, it is popular and widespread beyond its home country of Italy.

The Ancona is an attractive, small, perky and resilient chicken with good flight characteristics and a rather weak brood instinct. The original breed was black and white, the later developed color blue and white is not recognized as an approved breed standard in all national breeding associations. The white spots are not yet very pronounced in young chickens, but these spots become more pronounced with each moult . The characteristic features of the breed include yellow legs. Both sexes have a large, red single comb , which is slightly inclined to the side at the rear of the hens when they are laying. The ear discs are light. There are also beats that have a rose comb , but these are much less common.

The hen weighs approx. 2 kg, the rooster approx. 3 kg.
