Anda Kûitse [ anˈta ˈkuːit͡sːi ] (* 1951 in Kulusuk ; † September 21, 2019 ) was a Greenlandic drum dancer .

Life

Anda Kûitse was one of fourteen children of Vilhelm Kûitse (1897–1966) and his second wife Milka "Miilikka" Tûkula (1909–?). His grandparents were Kûitse, baptized Sejer (1876–?) And Kajãtilik, baptized Theodosia (1872–?) And Tûkula, baptized Kora (1882–?) And Tusiagteĸ, baptized Drusilla (1889–?). His older sister was the drum dancer Anna Kûitse Thastum (1942–2012).

The Tunumeer Anda comes from a long line of shamans and both of his parents were drum dancers. In 1972 Anda tried herself as a drum dancer for the first time. He never created new songs, but only sang those he had heard from his father, thus helping to ensure that these songs did not die out. Anda Kûitse performed locally and internationally, played in front of tourists and at cultural events and continued to teach drum dance. He was considered the most important drum dancer in the country and campaigned strongly against the extinction of this tradition. Anda Kûitse died in 2019 at the age of 68, leaving behind ten children.
