The Andersen fruit vampire ( Dermanura anderseni ) is a species of bat from the genus Dermanura , a sister genus of the actual fruit vampire ( Artibeus ). The art epithet honors the Danish zoologist Knud Christian Andersen . The species was long considered a junior synonym of the Gervais fruit vampire ( Dermanura cinerea ) and was recognized by Karl F. Koopman as an independent species in 1978 .

The coat color is dark brown. The skin and the limbs are thinly haired. The row of teeth in the upper jaw is almost parallel. The muzzle is raised at the front. The karyotype is unknown.

distribution

The distribution area of ​​the Andersen fruit vampire extends to Colombia , Brazil , Bolivia , Peru , Ecuador and French Guiana .

habitat

The Andersen fruit vampire inhabits forest fragments, primary forests and savannas from sea level to altitudes of 1350 m.

Way of life

The species builds its sleeping places in leaf tents. The food of the Andersen fruit vampire is largely unknown, but it includes a wide variety of fruits. Little data are available on reproductive behavior. Pregnant and lactating females have been observed in Colombia and Brazil from March to April and in Bolivia and Ecuador from September to November.
