André Gouzes

André Gouzes (born June 6, 1943 in Brusque , Aveyron ) is a French church musician , composer , priest and writer .

Life

Gouzes, who entered the Dominican order in 1963, studied theology and music in Paris. Gouzes is an important representative of contemporary church music. He composed numerous masses based on Orthodox music and antiphonal chants for the Liturgy of the Hours, a total of around three thousand compositions that are often performed in France as part of the Catholic liturgy.

He wrote the liturgy chorale du peuple de Dieu and built the Sylvanès monastery (between Toulouse and Montpellier) as a center for sacred music, spirituality and ecumenism. In July and August, the Abbey hosts the Festival international de musique sacrée de Sylvanès .

In 2006 André Gouzes was made a knight of the Légion d'honneur .
