The Sylvanès Monastery (Salvanesium) is a former Cistercian abbey in the municipality of Sylvanès in the Aveyron department , Occitania region , in France , southwest of the Causse du Larzac plateau and about 20 km south-southeast of Saint-Affrique on the banks of the Cabot stream.

history

On the site of a hermit settlement from 1132, Sylvanès was founded in 1136 by the Mazan monastery as the first daughter monastery. The abbey belonged to the filiation of the Cîteaux monastery . In 1146 it founded the Nonenque nunnery . The monastery had a few grangia , mostly not too far away. It suffered tremors in the wars of religion , especially in 1591, fell in the Kommende and was abolished in 1768, but in 1791 there were still four monks living in the monastery. In 1791 the church became a parish church , the rest of the complex was sold.

Buildings and plant

Rest of the cloister

The construction of the monastery buildings that still exist today began in 1151 a short distance from the previous location. The single-nave church is 48 m long and without chapels over 14 m wide, five yokes and pointed barrel vaults with wide belt arches. The approximately 1.50 m deep side chapels are also vaulted with a pointed barrel. The transept measures almost 26 m and has two rectangular chapels on each side. The choir is also closed in a rectangular shape. The choir head has three windows. The crossing has a vault with stitch caps and purely decorative ribs. From the southern church retreat of are chapter house , the monk hall and four Kreuzgangjoche get on the east side.

Modern music

In Sylvanès, the Dominican André Gouzes , who restored the complex, composed numerous masses based on Byzantine music as well as antiphonal chants for the Liturgy of the Hours , a total of around three thousand compositions that are often performed in France as part of the Catholic liturgy. In July and August, the Abbey hosts the Festival international de musique sacrée de Sylvanès .
