André Maréchal (born December 10, 1916 in La Garenne-Colombes ; † October 14, 2007 ) was a French physicist and specialist in optics. He was director of the Institut d'Optique.

Maréchal studied at the École normal supérieure with the degree in 1941 and then at the SupOptique ( École supérieure d'optique ) with the degree in 1943. He received his doctorate in 1948 at the Sorbonne , where he examined the combined effects of aberrations and diffraction in optics and derived the Maréchal criterion later named after him . In 1950 he became Maître des conférences and in 1955 Professor at the Sorbonne. From 1960 to 1967 he was a délégué général à la recherche scientifique et technique . 1968 to 1983 he was the third director of the Institut d'Optique.

He dealt with geometrical optics including computational methods with the computer, coherence, diffraction, image generation and image processing, Fourier optics. The development of new calculation algorithms for the optimization of optical systems led to the establishment of the company CERCO, which he advised.

In 1965 he received the Young Medal , the SPIE Gold Medal in 1989 and the CEK Mees Medal in 1977. He has been an honorary member of the Optical Society of America since 1986 . From 1962 to 1966 he was President of the International Commission for Optics (ICO) and in 1948 one of its founding delegates. He was a member of the Académie des Sciences and the French Academy of Technology since 1981 . He was an officer in the Legion of Honor and commander of the Ordre National du Merité.
