André Marchand (born February 10, 1907 in Aix-en-Provence ; † 1998 ) was a French painter, illustrator, set designer and tapestry designer. Marchand began painting at the age of 13 despite his family's categorical refusal to make art their profession. Six years later he went to Paris to follow his talent. He was self-taught and began exhibiting his works in Paris in 1932 in the Salon d'Automne and from 1933 in the Salon des Indépendants . At that time he created extremely realistic paintings and figures in desolate landscapes, such as Les Inconnus(1935–6; Paris, Pompidou). From 1933 to 1937 Marchand executed a series of Ingres- influenced drawings and continued painting still lifes and later abstract pictures. In 1937 Marchand was declared the undisputed winner of the Prix Paul-Guillaume . Marchand's works are exhibited in all major contemporary art museums.
